If you really want to save the house and have any resources, consult a Real Estate Attorney or look into Bankruptcy protection.
In Ca, you need to be 4 months behind before you get a NOD. Then it takes 60 days to get a sale or cure the default and the sale is generally 30-45 days later. This means from the time you missed the first payment to final sale, you have 6-8 months.
Look into a short sale or loan modification when you are 30 days past due. The problem is your mortgage company does not want to modify their terms until you are seriously past due and they can add hefty attorneys fees to your loan.
Good Luck
