I'm Rich....
I'm becoming more and more like my grandmother every day. It's not totally a bad thing. She was always the life of the party...the one making the most noise, the one who knew no strangers, the friendliest voice in the room. She would talk to anyone and everyone. She targeted small children first, animals next and then "old people", of which she said she never was. She especially loved people with nametags on so she could call them by name.
I remember her telling me the best part about growing old was having the nerve to talk to people and not really worry about what they thought. She said as a young person she would have never had the nerve to tell someone about Jesus and now she felt there were no risks to not tell someone. Every time we left the house she laid it all on the line...and sometimes over the line!
So, the other day I'm in a hurry. I ran into a small store to pick up some forgotten items. I left the engine on and the kids waiting in my get-away vehicle. I'm planning to grab, pay and get back on the road. This was more like a NASCAR pitstop than shopping.
I grabbed my essentials and went to the un-manned register and waited (and waited). Then came a still, small voice from the haircare aisle saying, "Sorry..I'll be with you in a minute".
The cash register attendant was also in charge of stocking the shelves. He made it back to the register with more apologies and assured him that he was ruining my entire day because I was already late. We had a good laugh between each other as I assured him I'm always late and no one will even notice. We continued chit-chatting back and forth.
When it was time to pay I started pulling out a lot of coins to lighten my billfold. I was teasing that now that I've given him all my nickels and dimes, I'd be poor again.
He said, "Are you really rich?".
Well, every now and again I pray to the Lord for the wisdom to say the right thing and the courage to do so. This was one of those moments I had prayed for and suddenly out of my mouth came, "Yes, I am rich. I have six beautiful children and Jesus loves me. I'm rich."
The lady behind me uttered, "Amen".
I walked out of the store with my little sack of goodies. I was so proud of me. I actually did the right thing for a change and didn't have to retract my foot from my mouth.
I sat back in the car where my six little cherubs were waiting for me. I said, "You're probably glad you weren't in there with me but I just told the man I'm rich because I have you and Jesus".
You could have heard their eyes rolling into the backs of their heads. I heard a moan of, "You didn't!".
Yep...I'm rich and they know it.
